About Hiiumaa

Some facts about Hiiumaa:
Area: ~1000 square km, the second largest island and the smallest country in Estonia
Population: ~11 000
Capital: Kärdla Coastline: ~326 km
The longest distance from coast to coast: from Kõpu to Sarve, 60 km
Highest point: Tornimägi, 68 km above sea level
Longest river: Luguse river, 21 km
Biggest lake: Tihu Suurjärv, ~85 ha
Biggest wetland: Pihla bog, ~3050 ha
There are four communes: Pühalepa, Käina, Emmaste and Kõrgessaare commune.

The island has been found in the sea first traces of fishermen and seal hunters. There is a lot of forests in Hiiumaa. It is a small island at the west of Estonia. It’s good to live in Hiiumaa. Here is easy and calm life. Here aren’t so much cars and loud noise as in towns. People in Hiiumaa are friendly. We are all together on little island and we are proud of it. It’s very nice place for living or visit it.

Our School

We have one litte and lovely school, which name is Lauka Basic School and it is 106 years old. It is two-storeyed red house with white windows.The symbol of school is owl.To our school belongs three other houses, these are : * house, where we can do handicraft/manual training and make a food. *eating house (canteen) * shed for the garden tools .

Behind the school there are stadium with basketball place and next to the handicraft house, there is a park. Our school has 9 forms and 12 classrooms. Subjects are : estonia, english, literatuure, history, math, natural science, monestic science,PH, IT, russian, art, music, handicraft and manuar training. At the moment we have about 100-120 students (7-15 years), 15 teachers. Our headmaster are Märt Rannast.

Most of the students are going to school by school-bus. All pupils in our collective are mostly friendly. No violence, no outrage.. Or just a litte bit but generally it is peaceful and protected school.
